Salt and pepper shakers are an essential part of every dining table, so it is no suprise that the shakers were one of 14 pieces that ran the entire length of production in the original fiestaware pottery line (over 33 years!). Interestingly, although Homer Laughlin China Company had been in business since 1872, it wasn't until designing fiestaware that the company put out a pair of shakers. Both the shakers will have seven holes, while the salt shaker will have larger holes, so true pairs will have different sized holes and collectors should look for this when building their collections. They also came with corked bottoms for the holes which are often missing. Replacements can be bought, but it is a treat to find them with their original corks still in tact. The shakers were slip cast from a mold and the seams would have been hand smoothed after firing, so we can expect to find various levels of seams showing depending on how much or little the piece was smoothed down by hand after the molding process. They will have an unglazed, dry white foot and will be unmarked. Look for better defined rings on the tops of the shakers for your collections.
