The oval platter was not part of the original 34 pieces released at the beginning of 1936, but when it was clear the brightly colored tableware was going to be a hit, Homer Laughlin China Company quickly added 17 more pieces to the ensemble. By the time Christmas rolled around the platter was hitting the shelves. Since the rings on the backsides of the fiesta flatware are added by hand on the jiggering machine and shapes that aren't round can't be jiggered the platters had to be made on a ram press so that both sides could be impressed with rings from the mold simultaneously. Interestingly, in 1947, the platter was shortened from 12 3/4" in length to 12 1/2" to help minimize warping that could happen under the force of the ram press.
